Office documents open read-only in Internet Explorer

Ever had a situation where the document opens in Read mode, instead of getting prompted?

This is a known issue with Office 2003 and MOSS 2007, the easiest way to fix this is to install any Office 2007 component / to modify the registry keys as outlined in this MS KB article:

Fix recommand above is for WSS 2.0 amd Sharepoint 2003. To reoslve the problem with check-in and Check-out of Office 2003 products and SharePoint Server 2007 or MOSS. Go into the Sharepoint > Shared Document > Settings > Document Lirbry Settings > versioning Settings > Require Check Out from Yes to NO.
*** make sure to turn on versioning each time you edit something.

Or :

For PC (Windows) Users:
1. On your desktop, click ‘My Computer’.
2. Click ‘Tools’.
3. Click ‘Folder Options’.
4. Click ‘File Types’.
5. Find the file type ‘.xls’ in the list and highlight it.
6. Click ‘Advanced’.
7. De-select ‘Browse in same window’.
8. Click ‘OK’.
9. Click ‘Close’

Wrong! This is not for Sharepoint : For sites that are not on a SharePoint server, in order to resolve this behavior so that open documents that are in the Internet or Local intranet security zones in Internet Explorer with read/write permissions, you must add the following registry key

Anyone have another way?
