Steve Ballmer, Microsoft's chief executive, has unveiled Bing, a new online search tool that he hopes will rival Google.
I suppose 'Bing', will be more successful than the company's two most recent incarnations: Live Search and MSN Search. Live Search is my Home page, I love the different picture it has each day.
Is this the post Yahoo Search strategy?
A few search facts for 2009:
-Google was used for 64.2 per cent of queries, and Yahoo's share totaled 20.4 per cent.
-Google's sales - $4.7 billion in the first quarter - are tied to its search dominance

Dealing with large SharePoint Lists and documents Libraries
Best Practices for large SharePoint Lists and documents Libraries
SharePoint lists and document libraries are not designed to handle large numbers of items, in fact as soon as you add more than a few thousand you will see a warning within the List Settings Page that says:
This list or library contains a large number of items. Learn about managing a large list or library and ensuring that items display quickly.
As part of my product suite I consistently have lists with hundreds of thousands of items in them and have learned many valuable lessons in making large numbers of items workable.
1. First off do not use the DataView webpart (from the SharePoint designer) or any xml based rendering webpart as they first grab all the items in the list and then apply the XLST to render and you will face both memory and huge performance problems. The regular list webpart works fine even for large datasets, but you will not be able to get total list counts regardless.
2. If you are planning on sorting or filtering by any columns be sure to add them to the list’s indexed fields in the list settings page.

Office 2010: Groove renamed to SharePoint Workspace
The next version of Groove is getting a new name; the successor to Microsoft Office Groove 2007 will be SharePoint Workspace 2010.
Microsoft claims that this is a natural progression since Groove is to SharePoint like Outlook is to Exchange. SharePoint Workspace 2010 won't just be the same product with a new name: the software giant plans to add features that make it easier to deploy and manage. At the same time, Microsoft says that SharePoint Workspace will make it easier to access SharePoint content (or content from any server that implements the publicly documented protocols).
Microsoft also noted this week that SharePoint Workspace and OneNote will be added to Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2010. The addition of these two products into this SKU should be a big deal for Volume Licensing customers.

SharePoint with Firefox and Safari
In the good old days of .....2007, when everyone used Explorer as their browser :) cross browser compatibility wasn’t an issue.
Now Safari is making in roads.
I’ve noticed that Fire Fox is being used a lot unofficially with some of our clients. This is course problems with SharePoint if you customize the css files and master pages. Today IE, Firefox, and Safari handle CSS rendering and the code contained within HTML editor Web Parts in different ways. Firefox can be resolved without too much heavy lifting, but Safari is a different beast and it’s not just look and feel, but also authentication issues and lost cookies, plus missing Office integration features and menus, etc.
Also running Safari on a mac and pc is a different experience, not just with fonts.

It’ll be good to know the requirements before the work commences.
Brings back memories of the Netscape and Explorer wars of the 90’s.

The comeback of frames
One of the web trends I’ve noticed over the past couple of months is that framing on web pages is making a comeback.
Digg and Google images.
This is usually used when framing links to other sites, something that has become popular in recent years.
A lot of developers hate frames as it restricts their ability to put multiple content sources on a page.
